The St. Paul Baptist Church in Montclair is hosting 19 children who have lost everything since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans two years ago.
Parishioner Dr. Gwen Parker Ames is credited with the idea. The children flew in and will spend two weeks sightseeing and taking a break from their stressful lives. They will stay with host families in the area.
?It's a great opportunity to reach out and touch people? You know that will have an impact rather than sending things through the mail,? host parent Jaqueline England said.
Volunteers had an outdoor barbecue for the children and said they have other events planned while the children are staying in New Jersey.
