Military helicopters spotted in Bedminster ahead of possible President Trump visit
Military helicopters were spotted in Somerset County Tuesday, a day after the FAA ordered restricting airspace around the area later this week.
The restrictions will be in place from May 4 until May 7. Officials will only say that a “VIP” will be coming to the area, but it is believed that President Donald Trump will be visiting his Bedminster golf course this week.
Some Somerset County residents tell News 12 New Jersey that they saw military Ospreys and helicopters that looked like Marine One landing at the Somerset Airport Tuesday afternoon.
“I happened to hear the thump-thump-thump-thump-thump and I knew it was a little more than the medivac,” says Bridgewater resident Edward Kasica.
The FAA’s restrictions will cover a 10-mile radius, and Somerset Airport is at the center of the no-fly zone. There will also be a 30-mile restriction, which only aircrafts with a filed flight plan will be allowed to enter.
“Our goal is to have no violations of the flight restricted area this year, so we're hoping to get the word out to all the pilots, and it's a bad reflection on us,” says Somerset Airport flight instructor Byron Hamby.
Some residents tell News 12 that they believe they will see flight restrictions for months around Bedminster, until the president decides to go back to his Mar-a-Lago estate next winter.
