A massive sinkhole has shut down a portion of a roadway in Toms River.
The sinkhole on Windsor Avenue is about 30 feet by 20 feet wide. Police officers noted that the asphalt in the area was cracking on Tuesday. It caved in shortly after that.
"The mains in both sides of the manhole are involved in this,” says Robert Dibiase, with the Toms River Municipal Utilities Authority. “So, we have water undermining the manhole and there are a few other issues that are going on here, but we have to remove the manhole in order to assess the damage underneath, build a foundation, and rebuild the manhole."
Windsor Avenue will remain closed between League Road and Garfield Avenue until repairs are finished. Officials say that it could take over a month to repair.
