Emergency crews rushed to the scene of a manhole fire in Parkchester that forced the evacuation of several nearby businesses.
Firefighters say a transformer went up in flames outside the post office location on West Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
Four buildings were evacuated as a precaution along Metropolitan Avenue, including a Macy's after employees reported smelling smoke inside the stockroom.
Con Edison crews are assessing the situation. They believe the cause of the fire may be due to equipment failure, but it's still under investigation.
No one was hurt in the explosion.
