A sobering reminder of the potentially deadly consequences of drunk driving is on display in Huntington.
Bill Holden says there's not a day that goes by when he doesn't think of his wife, Karen. The 56-year old nurse from Huntington Station was killed by a drunk driver in June 2016. Holden and his son Robby were also in the car but survived.
"The holidays have no meaning for us anymore," Holden said. "All they do is bring sadness, and we want people to be aware."
On Monday, the Holdens joined the nonprofit Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Town of Huntington officials to launch an anti-drunk driving campaign for the holiday season. It includes parking a wrecked car right on the Village Green on Route 25A and Park Avenue.
There are also red ribbons available for pickup as part of the "Tie One On" campaign. The ribbons can be put in cars to serve as a reminder for people to call a cab if they have been drinking. They're available through MADD or at Huntington Town Hall.
Ryan Gurecki, 36, of Lindenhurst, was sentenced to six to 18 years in prison for aggravated vehicular homicide for the crash that killed Holden's wife.
