A meeting on school safety and security took a tense turn Wednesday night in Rocky Point after a parent pulled out a knife while trying to prove a point.
In cellphone video sent to News 12, a man is seen confronting a speaker during the school meeting – commenting on how long it would take for police to show up during an attack.
“If I were to attack you, it would take the cops three to five minutes to come here. Probably 10, if the traffic is bad,” the man said in front of a room filled with school district officials, students and parents.
At this point, the man took out a pocket knife but did not open it.
“What are you going to do now?” he asks the speaker, as he begins to back away.
Many in the room then began to call out, asking the man to stop. No one was hurt during the incident.
Superintendent Michael F. Ring said in a statement to parents that “a parent in attendance attempted to conduct a demonstration to reinforce his belief that all school districts” should have armed security guards.
“While the district firmly acknowledges that the demonstration was ill-conceived and inappropriate for the venue, we believe that the act was not intended to compromise the safety of those in attendance,” Ring said in the statement.
He says district personnel stopped the demonstration and school security removed the man from the meeting.
