Officials say 27-year-old Jeffrey Michel, of Colts Neck, was walking along Route 37 westbound at Fischer Boulevard when he was run down and killed.
The incident happened at around 8 p.m. Friday. Toms River police say that the driver may have been in a blue vehicle and a witness tells News 12 it may have been a pickup truck.
News 12 has learned that Michel was a nursing student at Brookdale Community College and had claimed that he had been a victim of police brutality at the hands of campus police. The claim was under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
Police are looking for witnesses to the incident and say they are also looking into getting video from a traffic camera at the intersection where Michel was hit.
News 12 attempted to speak with Michel's family at their home in Colts Neck, but no one was available.
