For the first time since 2001, New Jersey lawmakers have approved a state budget that doesn't call for new taxes or tax increases.
Both houses of the Legislature approved the $33.4 billion spending plan Thursday. It was passed in theSenate by a 22-15 vote, just hours after the Assembly voted 50-30 to approve the plan.
The approval comes nine days before the constitutional deadline.
That's far different from last year, when the state government shutdown for a week because lawmakers and Governor Corzine couldn't agree on a budget.
The Senate also voted to approve a plan barring newly elected officials from holding more than one elected office. And they also agreed to ask voters in November to dedicate all money from last year's sales tax increase to property tax relief.
The Assembly had approved both proposals earlier this month.
