For the second time this week, a lawsuit has been announced against the Catholic Church in New Jersey over sexual abuse claims.
James Grein says he was molested by former Newark Archbishop Theodore McCarrick for 20 years, beginning at age 11.
McCarrick, now 89, went on to become the archbishop of Washington, D.C. but was dismissed from the clergy earlier this year.
Grein is suing the Newark Archdiocese and the Metuchen Diocese where McCarrick also worked.
Grein says McCarrick was a family friend who abused him in church rectories and on trips. He says on one trip to the Vatican, he even told Pope John Paul II that McCarrick was abusing him.
He says later, McCarrick threatened him if he went public with his claims.
Attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represents Grein and survivors of sexual abuse, is demanding that the Catholic Church release all records related to Cardinal McCarrick.
The Archdiocese of Newark said in part today, "We reassure the faithful that we continue to do all we can to promote healing of victims, to enact structures of accountability and to provide greater transparency into the activities of the Archdiocese of Newark."
And the Diocese of Metuchen said in a statement, "Though this is a painful and horrific chapter in the history of the church, the Diocese of Metuchen has taken many steps to protect children and will continue on this path..."
Neither directly addressed Grein's lawsuit.
