A state senator is drafting a bill that calls for New Jersey restaurants to ditch artery-clogging trans fats.

Ellen Karcher (D-12th District) announced her plan about a week after New York health officials said they?re considering a similar measure. Trans fats are blamed for health issues like heart problems and weight gain. Officials say the altered fats are less healthy than oils such as soy and canola.

Several New Jersey residents say they?re in favor of the change, while others feel the state is becoming too invasive. The New Jersey Restaurant Association is also against the push.
