Seton Hall Prep is poised to dedicate a lacrosse field to an alumnus who was murdered nearly three years ago.
A ceremony scheduled to take place Saturday will dedicate the field to Brendan Tevlin who was shot and killed in West Orange in June 2014.
"You’re on this life for a short period of time. It's not how long but what you do in that short period and that's exactly how Brendan lived his life and he's a great role model for our kids and always will be,” says coach Dave Giarrusso.
Tevlin was an especially great role model for his younger brother, Brian Tevlin.
Brian is now a senior captain on the Seton Hall Prep lacrosse team.
His big brother's initials are at the center of the field. Brian says it also brings out the best in him.
“There’s still some moments when I get choked up,” Brian says.
Brian says his older brother’s memory is what motivates him.
“[Brendan] surfed a little bit, I surfed a little bit. He played soccer and lacrosse, that’s kind of how I got into everything,” Brian says. “He played the bag pipes. He was the one who introduced me to that so he was kind of the reason I got into everything.”
Brendan Tevlin was allegedly killed by Ali Muhammad Brown. Brown allegedly told authorities that he killed Tevlin, as well as three other people in Seattle, as punishment for the United States’ foreign policy toward Islamic states.
Brian says that he's not over his brother’s death and that there is still grief. He says that he tries to fulfill his brother's mantra, “Good vibes and easy living.”
“It rings true to who he was. Good vibes and easy living. He did everything with a full heard, full mind and that’s just who he was,” Brian says.
Brian Tevlin is set to play for Yale University next year.
