All Lacey Township police officers will begin wearing body cameras while on duty, Chief Michael DiBella announced Tuesday.

DiBella says that all uniformed sergeants and officers assigned to the Patrol Division will be wearing the cameras and recording their interactions with the public.

“The Lacey Township Police Department has made a promise to serve our community with honor and integrity in order to maintain your confidence in our organization. In keeping with that promise, I am happy to announce that we will be implementing the use of body cameras,” DiBella said in a video posted on the police department’s website.

The chief says that the main goal is to provide transparency. He says that the cameras will provide protection against false claims, capture the positive work the department does with the public and to provide evidence in crimes and DUI cases.

DiBella says that the program has the overwhelming support of the public and various groups in the town such as the Elks Lodge and veterans’ groups.
