Attorneys have selected a jury for the upcoming corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez.

The panel of six men and six women plus four alternates was selected Wednesday afternoon, a day after the questioning began. The jury is made up of people from a wide variety of racial and occupational backgrounds.

The senator said that he was happy with the jury selection, but would not comment further on the trial.

Menendez chose to criticize President Donald Trump’s comments that he would shut down the federal government if the border wall was not funded.

"The president is outright wrong about the wall.  Mexico won't pay for it and United States citizens shouldn't have to pay for it.  And to suggest that he will shut the government down because of a wall is not included in the funding, is outrageous,” Menendez said.

Menendez and a wealthy campaign donor are charged with a bribery scheme involving gifts and donations in return for political influence.

The donor, Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen, is on trial with Menendez.

Opening statements are scheduled for Sept. 6. The trial is expected to last about two months.
