A judge ruled Friday that Jersey City Mayor Jeremiah Healy would not be removed from office because of his 2006 convictions.

The judge for the Superior Court of New Jersey dismissed the lawsuit and ruled that Healy?s convictions after an incident at Bradley Beach in 2006 had nothing to do with his position as Jersey City? s mayor. The lawsuit argued that elected officials must resign if they are convicted of an offense.

Healy was found guilty of obstruction of justice and resisting arrest in 2006 after trying to intervene in an argument outside a Bradley Beach bar, which is owned by his sister. Police officers testified then that Healy interfered with them as they attempted to break up the fight.

Healy was not surprised by the judge?s decision.

"It's what we anticipated from day one,? Healy says. ?It was a frivolous lawsuit from the beginning and...politically motivated."
