Several Jersey Shore communities are taking precautions Friday as a May nor’easter approaches for the weekend.

"We were hoping that May would be better than April, but right now the weather has not been cooperating,” says Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty.

Doherty says that the borough is taking precaution to minimize damage from high wind and heavy rain.

Forecasters say that Saturday’s storm could bring over 1 inch of rain to the Garden State. Localized and coastal flooding are possible.

Belmar crews spent the day securing beach garbage cans and other summer gear that was already set up in preparation for Memorial Day. The nearby lake was also drained below normal levels to prevent possible flooding.

Crews in Point Pleasant Beach removed the temporary Manasquan Inlet wall. The $42,000 wall failed during the March nor’easter and left the beach open to severe erosion.

“Within a week if failed on one side and then it failed on the other said,” says Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Stephen Reid.

Reid says that he does not expect heavy damage this time around even with the wall open. But he says that as a precaution the town will send out a reverse 911 call urging residents to park their cars on higher ground. Reid says that the DEP will fast track a permanent fix for the wall.

“We need to fix this,” he says. “It’s not a Band Aid.”

The weather is expected to improve by the beginning of next week, and shore residents say that they are counting down the days until the unofficial start to summer.

“I know that next week it’s going to be warm and I take the good with the bad,” says Belmar resident Ellie Coviello. “It’s beautiful here all summer.”

Belmar is expected to host its seafood festival next weekend. Point Pleasant Beach has off-shore power boat races scheduled for next weekend as well.
