The 15th Amendment gave African Americans the right to vote. It happened in 1870. The next day, Thomas Mundy Peterson voted in an election in Perth Amboy. Fourteen years later the town gave him a medallion to mark the history he made. Peterson died on this day – Feb. 4 – in 1904.
