Jersey City swears in 32 new police officers
Jersey City Police Department has sworn in 32 new police officers onto the force.
The new class of recruits arrives in the wake of a violent week in the city, which includes the shooting death of the Jersey City fire chief's son.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says the new officers have a hard job ahead. He says the new officers will be stationed in the South and West precincts. Mayor Fulop says these areas are "some of the toughest areas of Jersey City."
However, despite the recent influx of violence, the mayor says gunfire deaths are down.
"It was our sixth homicide of the year. To put it in perspective, at the same time last year we were at 10. It's trending in a good direction," Fulop says.
Investigators are looking to see if there are any links between the recent shootings.
With the new officers sworn in, Jersey City's Police Force now stands at 800 officers. The hope is that the increase in patrols and visibility makes the city safer.
