Jersey City officials are taking steps to be prepared in the event that recreational marijuana becomes legalized in New Jersey.
The Jersey City City Council gave its initial approval to restrictions on where marijuana can and cannot be grown and sold in the city. The council says that they want the city to have as much say as possible about where marijuana dispensaries can be located.
Mayor Steven Fulop says that the decisions should be based on neighborhood feedback and input from the public.
"We don't want them all just consolidated towards the wealthier part of the city and other areas are still neglected,” Fulop says. “We want to see it kind of throughout Jersey City in a fair, equitable way.
Fulop also says that the city wants to make sure that some of the revenue goes toward social justice issues for communities that have been underserved.
The ordinance will go for a second vote at the next City Council meeting.
