A man and a woman died in a house fire early this morning in West Orange, according to city officials.

The blaze erupted at the Northfield Townhouses at 585 Northfield Ave. at 12:18 a.m. Officials say there was heavy fire in the basement unit that spread throughout the three-story building.

According to officials, search crews removed the two victims and began life-saving treatment. The man and woman were transported to Cooperman Barnabas where they died. Another resident was treated for smoke inhalation.

Officials say the fire was placed under control 45 minutes later with no reported damage into adjacent apartments.

Red Cross was notified for neighboring residents who were displaced due to smoke conditions, officials say.

There’s no word on the cause of the fire or how many people were displaced.
