Hundreds marched to the New Jersey State House Monday to call on lawmakers to support legislation establishing a state driver's license for residents who cannot prove they are in the United States legally.
Rally organizer Juan Pablo Orjuela says the legislation is important because many immigrants in the state need a car in order to get to work. He says the measure could promote safety by encouraging people to purchase auto insurance.
About 450 marchers first met at Trenton's War Memorial and then walked to the State House steps. Some carried flags. Others wore stickers reading "Drive Safe NJ." Many spoke Spanish.
The Assembly Homeland Security Committee is set to consider the measure Monday.
Gov. Chris Christie says he does not support the legislation and would veto it if approved. He says that the idea is dangerous.
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano wrote the legislation and says the rally filled her with hope.
