Hundreds of family and friends gathered in East New York Wednesday morning to support loved ones who were promoted within the New York City Fire Department.
More than 100 fire and EMS officers were promoted during the ceremony.
One person was promoted to division chief, three to deputy chief, 20 to captain, one to new supervising fire marshal, more than 20 new fire marshals, and 60 firefighters have been promoted to lieutenant.
One of those lieutenants, Ronnie Gies, says this is not just a promotion. He says his father, also named Ronnie, was on the list to be promoted to lieutenant but lost his life on Sept. 11. He tells News 12 he is not sure where he will go just yet.
Those promoted Wednesday will now be assigned to units throughout the city.
