Hoboken sees 20th water main break this year
The work to fix Hoboken's 20th water main break of the year could continue into the early morning hours Friday, according to officials. The break is also highlighting the chronic problem of the city's water system.
"I think we need to look more into the foundation of the building's that are being built along with the pipes," says Vivian Torres.
The break occurred around 5 a.m. near Willow Avenue and 16th Street. The problem could stem from early 20th century pipes that could have been designed in the 19th century.
"It's constantly happening every six to eight months," Torres says.
The city of Hoboken says it's trying to make sure the problem doesn't keep happening, but it says it sold its water rights to Suez water. The company is not required to make improvements.
"I've had the water go out in my apartment probably twice since I've been living in Hoboken that's been about 4 years," says Brian Madden.
The city is financing upgrades to the water system, and could rebid the water contract to get a new manager for the system. It is also trying to renegotiate the contract with Suez.
Suez water hasn't officially nailed down precisely where the line broke, but the whole main had to be shut down.
The city also said nearby soccer fields were closed until further notice.
