Greenwich's police department and a towing company have partnered up to put a new twist on a safe, sober ride home during the holidays.
Starting today, Riverside Service is offering residents a free ride home for them, as well as their vehicles. Owner Albert Jagodzinski says he came up with the idea for the holiday season.
Those who have been drinking and can't drive can call the Greenwich Police Department's non-emergency number at 203-622-8004 to arrange for a ride home, including a free tow.
Jagodzinski says he previously participated in a similar AAA program, but it ended several years ago. He says after seeing a recent story on News 12 about a deadly DUI accident, he contacted police about teaming up.
"When you call a tow truck, it's never a great time. Your car's broken down or you're stuck, so we figured it would kind of be a bright spot for the towing industry to say, 'Hey, we're gonna give back a little bit,'" says Jagodzinski. "So we wanted to start it here and give back to the people in our town, all our customers been so good to us."
Riverside Service opened up back in 1992, and is currently the only towing company left in town. The company has 11 tow trucks, all of which are tracked by GPS.
The program runs through Jan. 2. Police say even if only one driver takes advantage of the service, it'll be worth it.
