Gov. Phil Murphy announced Saturday that he signed a new executive order demanding nearly 9 million New Jersey residents stay at home amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The state announced 442 new cases, bringing the state total to 1,327 positive cases of COVID-19. The state death toll has also increased by five to 16 people.
Murphy says that if people's behaviors don't change, the number of Jersey's cases will be in the thousands. As part of the order, all gatherings are also canceled and all non-essential employees are ordered to work from home.
The second executive order says that the state's newly-announced restrictions will supersede any local, county and municipal restrictions already in place.
The state is working with the Attorney General's Office and on-call prosecutors to handle cases of non-essential people not following the stay at home rule.
People are allowed to go for a walk or run, go to the grocery store or other essential businesses but must be at least 6 feet apart of each other.
