Gov. Lamont considering tolls for cars on state roads in CT
Gov. Ned Lamont said in a social media post Saturday that he's considering bringing back tolls for cars on state roads in Connecticut.
During his campaign, Lamont said he would not consider tolls for cars on state roads.
Lamont said in a video posted to Twitter that he cannot fix Connecticut’s economy without fixing the transportation system and bringing it into the 21st century.
He said he wants to hear what residents think about adding a toll for cars, as well a promised a maximum discount for in-state drivers.
Republican state Sen. Tony Hwang says constituents feel betrayed and that his campaign was bait and switch. He says he feels the state hasn't explored other proposals.
Some residents say campaign promises need to be broken while others debated how much longer they can afford to live in the state.
The cost of the tolls has yet to be decided. One DOT study suggests that in-state drivers could pay 5.5 cents per mile during peak hours and 4.4 cents per mile for off-peak hours.
