Gas in N.J. hits tough milestone
AAA-New Jersey is confirming what most motorists already know: For the first time, gasoline across the state is selling for more than $4 per gallon.
AAA announced Tuesday that the Garden State had reached the milestone overnight.
Gas prices in New Jersey are still lower than in many other places in the country.
The national average is $4.11. Averages across the country range from $3.91 in Missouri to $4.63 in Alaska.
In New Jersey, average prices were the highest in the Trenton area, at $4.03 per gallon, and in Middlesex, Somerset and Hunterdon counties, at $4 per gallon.
A Web site called mygallons.com is offering a credit card which locks gas prices for subscribers. According to the company, the card is accepted at 95 percent of filling stations.
Customers must pay a membership fee, however, as well as charges to refill the card or for overdrawing. The company claims to make its money from advertisers on its site.
The site is the first national company to offer such a service. Several companies have already offered similar regional services.
