Relief is coming for pedestrians trying to navigate Route 22 in Springfield, Kenilworth and Union.

A free shuttle bus service, which starts Monday, will start from Monroe Street in Union and make 15 stops in the most congested stretch of Route 22 in Union, Kenilworth and Springfield. Union County will operate the shuttle for six months on a trial basis.

The county received a $280,000 grant for the service because the roadway is considered treacherous. Officials say the danger comes from heavy traffic and fast-moving cars.

Signs will be put up marking the locations of shuttle stops. Most of the stops are existing New Jersey Transit bus stops.
