Young women across New Jersey are taking note of a new study that says a deadly form of skin cancer cases are soaring in their age group.

The study was published in last week's Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Exposure to the sun is said to be creating more cases of melanoma in women ages 15 to 39. Doctors in New Jersey say that in an era of stronger sunshine and increased use of tanning beds, the desire for that perfect tan comes with a potentially life-threatening price.

"I think the tanning salons [are] a very bad idea and I hate to say that for the tanning salons, but nonetheless it is contributing to this whole issue," says Dr. Derrick DeSilva Jr. of Internal Integrative Medicine.

While the study may scare some young women into the shade, others such as Jennifer Castanza say that as long as she's got her sunscreen on she won?t stop tanning.

An analysis of government cancer statistics from 1973 to 2004 found that the rate of new melanoma cases in younger women had jumped 50 percent since 1980 but did not increase for younger men in that period.
