First dog rescued from Howell hoarding situation officially adopted
One of the nearly 300 dogs rescued from hoarding conditions in Howell has found a forever home.
Alaina Casha volunteers at the Monmouth County SPCA. She says that she fell in love with one of the dogs, a French bulldog, and decided to adopt it. She and her husband were quickly vetted and approved to take the dog home.
"I just want to give the dog a second chance," she says. "We can't wait to bring this dog in and give them the best love and all the attention we possibly can give."
The dogs were rescued from the Howell home last week. Officials say that the home was in deplorable conditions and many of the dogs had never been out of the house. There were even several dogs that were giving birth to puppies while the rescue was happening.
The SPCA says that the French bulldog adopted by Casha was one of the first dogs rescued from the home. SPCA employee Lisa Sandor says that the dog had never been outside.
The Cashas say that they are planning on naming the dog Sunshine or Lucky.
Many of the other dogs are being prepped for their own adoptions. They are being spayed and neutered, and they will undergo behavioral assessments.
The dogs' owners called the SPCA Wednesday to report that four more dogs were found inside the home. This now brings the total number of dogs rescued to 280. Two puppy litters were also born at St. Hubert's Animal Rescue in Madison since the rescue.
The SPCA police chief says a meeting is scheduled at the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Monday to decide how the dog owners should be charged.
