Dozens displaced after 3-alarm fire in Mott Haven
A three-alarm fire ripped through an apartment building in Mott Haven Monday, displacing dozens of residents.
Crews say the fire started on the top floor of a five-story building at 570 St. Mary's St.
Flames billowed out of the roof and top floor windows, starting at around 7:45 p.m.
Many streets were closed in the area as more than 100 members of the FDNY battled the blaze that quickly upgraded to three alarms.
Dozens of residents were forced to evacuate into the cold night.
The Red Cross tells News 12 that they spoke with up to 40 displaced people and arranged emergency housing in hotels for 20 adults and five children.
The fire department says no one from the building was injured, and three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Investigators tell News 12 that those firefighters are expected to make a full recovery.
Officials say the damage is mostly contained on the top floor of the apartment building.
No word yet when residents of that floor will be allowed back in.
It is believed unattended food on a stove may have been the cause of the fire, but fire officials have not yet confirmed that, and say they are continuing to investigate.
