Firefighters in Passaic have rescued a mother and child from the third floor of a burning building.
The first sparked in an apartment complex on Dayton Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The Passaic fire chief tells News 12 New Jersey that the fire quickly escalated to four alarms. The chief says that a witness began yelling that a mother and 4-year-old girl were trapped on the third floor.
Firefighters were able to get a ladder up to a window and carried the girl down. The chief says that this is when the mother began yelling from another window. Firefighters rescued her as well.
The mother and child were checked out by EMS, but did not sustain any serious injuries.
The mayor of Passaic tells News 12 that firefighters also rescued several other people from the building. No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross responded to the building to help families who were displaced by the fire.
The chief says that the Passaic Fire Department was just minutes away from holding a ceremony online to promote several firefighters when the call came in.
