Fire kills 1, leaves at least 66 families homeless
A fire in a Hoboken apartment building Tuesday has left one person dead and at least 66 families homeless.
The building is located on Washington Street at 12th Street. Fire officials believe the fire broke out in the fourth-floor apartment of the 28-year-old man who was found dead. The victim?s roommate was able to escape with burns to his head and chest. The other tenants in the building were able to get out safely.
The fire caused a collapse of the fourth-floor ceiling and a partial collapse of the roof. Authorities say the fire spread quickly due to the absence of a fire sprinkler system. According to fire officials, the lack of a sprinkler system is common in older buildings.
Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
