Father of Monmouth University suspect Keith Williams says robbery attempt was a prank
The father of a Monmouth University student accused of trying to rob two female students on campus says the incident was actually a Halloween prank.
Kenny Williams says that his son Keith was not trying to rob the two women when he allegedly put on a mask and pointed what looked like a gun at them. The former university football player also allegedly told the girls to hand over their cellphones.
"It was a dumb mistake, a dumb prank. He gotta deal with it," says Kenny Williams, "I just want people to know the real deal, not make my son look like he's a terrorist or something."
The incident prompted a lockdown at the university that lasted several hours. Keith Williams was eventually found inside a dormitory and taken into custody.
Williams was charged with first-degree armed robbery. He made his first court appearance Thursday morning. His bail was set at $100,000.
The student does not have any prior criminal history.
