Family of teen struck by car will donate organs
The family of a 15-year-old girl critically injured in a hit-and-run says they will donate the teen's organs.
Marissa Procopio was declared brain dead after she was struck by a car while walking across Route 36 at the Avenue D intersection Tuesday night in the Leonardo section of Middletown. She was walking home from work.
Police have identified the alleged driver who struck Procopio as Toni Ann Beasich Marletta, 49, of Leonardo. She allegedly did not stop after striking the teen.
Procopio played the clarinet with the band at Hendry Hudson Regional High School. Her cousin Melissa Procopio says the family was able to say their goodbyes at the hospital.
"It's hard to see [Marissa] that way, with all the tubes everywhere," she says. "I held her hand and I wanted her to grab my hand."
The Procopio family is keeping Marissa on life support for now for possible organ donation.
Beasich Marletta has not yet been charged in the crash. Middletown police say the crash is under investigation.
