Friends and family of a Hackensack man shot and killed by police are demanding a grand jury hear the case.
On May 21, police officers responded to the home of Elvin Diaz after he missed a probation meeting. According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Diaz threatened the officers with a meat cleaver and was shot and killed.
However, Diaz's family claims the two police officers barged into the home without warning and without a warrant and shot Diaz without provocation.
"They just shot him, shot him like a dog," says Diaz's father Julian. "I had to clean his blood. His blood was all over the kitchen."
The prosecutor's office has said that the case would be heard by a grand jury, but so far one has not convened to hear the case.
"There should be justice for what happened," says Diaz's brother Kevin. "Police should have better procedures when dealing with cases and they shouldn't be entering homes illegally and shooting innocent people in their homes."
The Diaz family does say that they have faith in the justice system and understands that the process takes time.
A spokesperson for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office declined to comment on this case, saying grand jury proceedings by law are kept private.
