Facebook has taken down the “Rise Up Ocean County” page after New Jersey leaders expressed concern about anti-Semitic content.
A little less than a year ago, state leaders sent Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg a letter requesting that the page be taken down.
The anonymously run public page was created in 2018. Its administrators state that the purpose was to criticize overdevelopment in Ocean County towns like Lakewood – a New Jersey town with a high population of Orthodox Jewish residents.
But commenters and admins on the page would sometimes post memes and comments with negative Jewish stereotypes or comments that had little to do with land development.
The administers took the page down in early January after what they described as a coordinated attack. But the page returned a few days later.
Attorney General Gurbir Grewal posted on Twitter Wednesday that the page had been taken down permanently for violating Facebook’s hate-speech policies.
“We've been clear that this page trafficked in hate that has no place in [New Jersey]. Now [Facebook] decided it violates their standards too,” Grewal posted on Twitter.
The page’s administrators posted on their official website that they would appeal the ban.
