Parts of New Jersey saw nearly 5 inches of rain Friday after causing flooding along many state roadways.

Experts say that while flash flooding is often the most visible sign of too much rain in a short period of time, there are other concerns as well.

Large amounts of rain can often lead to puddling – which in turn leads to an increase in mosquitoes. Mosquitoes will often lay their eggs in standing water. The increase in mosquitoes can then lead to an increase in mosquito-borne illnesses around New Jersey, according to some experts.

State climatologist David Robinson says that “excessive rain can lead to prolonged intervals of standing water…even in items such as used tires.”

Robinson also say that heavy rain can cause soil erosion and put a stop to farming.

Other problems with heavy rain totals include runoff into the ocean, which can cause high levels of bacteria in the water. Beaches at the Jersey Shore are often closed for a time due to a high bacteria count.

More rain is expected this week in New Jersey. News 12 meteorologists say that there is a chance of rain and a thunderstorm every day until the weekend.
