Many police departments around the state, including Englishtown, are taking part in a national campaign to make sure students stay safe, especially as they ride the bus to class.
The new national campaign is all about making sure everyone stops when the bus lights turn on.
The state Division of Highway Traffic and Safety and the New Jersey Department of Education are working with local law enforcement to increase awareness when it comes to obeying traffic laws, especially in school zones and along bus routes.
Police follow behind school buses on their routes during the campaign.
In New Jersey alone, 700,000 students are transported to and from school daily.
A survey found in a single day last spring, motorists illegally passed stopped school buses on 793 occasions.
The police chief says there’s been no major incidents here in Englishtown.
Many police departments throughout the state are following buses in unmarked vehicles and plan to continue at least for the rest of the month.
