One school district's plan to cut bus service is drawing criticism from concerned parents.

Elmwood Park Superintendent Richard Tomko wants to hire six more teachers, including three special education teachers. To do so, Tomko says school buses are on the chopping block.The proposed plan would cut Elmwood Park's busing program back to the bare minimum required by the state, which means only students who live more than two miles from school would be eligible for busing. This rule would cut the number of kids riding the bus by 90 percent.

The superintendent says the new plan would include adding crossing guards and giving parents the option of getting bus service for a $50 monthly fee.

Tomko says the district cannot keep up with enrollment and special education. Twenty-three percent of Elmwood Park's students are in special education courses, while the state average is 15 percent.
