Elizabeth officials honored the two men who found a backpack full of pipe bombs last week near the Elizabeth train station.
Lee Parker and Ivan White were presented keys to the city and were praised for alerting police about the explosives when they found the backpack last week.
"The man who set these things in motion was intent on murder," White says. "I was there at the perimeter when the robot detonated the bomb. I was a distance away. It was frightening."
"The heroic deed was just doing the right thing," Parker says.
Friends and family of the two men attended the ceremony.
Ahmad Khan Rahami is accused of planting the bombs. He is also accused of planting bombs in Seaside Park while a military 5K race was taking place, as well as in New York City. No one was hurt in Seaside Park, but 31 people were injured when the New York bomb went off.
Rahami remains in the hospital after he was injured in a shootout with Linden police officers. The American Civil Liberties Union has said that the organization will represent him until an attorney takes up his case.
The ACLU says Rahami's family asked for the group's help. Rahami faces federal charges.
