Drivers and residents divided over highway widening
Drivers and residents have mixed feelings over the proposed widening of the Garden State Parkway all the way to Exit 30.
The parkway to South Jersey now narrows to only two lanes in each direction, but the Jersey Turnpike Authority is planning an $800 million project to widen the road between Exits 30 and 80, using funds from a recently proposed toll increase.
While most drivers who talked to News 12 New Jersey are in favor of the expansion, Jeff Tittle, of the environmental group the Sierra Club, says it's a bad idea. Tittle argues the addition of one lane in each direction would promote development, and during the off-season, traffic is too light to warrant the construction costs.
Nonetheless, construction is slated to start next year between Exits 63 to 80. There is no date set for widening the remaining section between Exits 63 and 30.
