The Department of Transportation and State Police Tuesday are reminding the public about the upcoming construction of the Route 1 bridge over I-95 in Stamford.
The Route 1 bridge at Exit 9 on I-95 will be replaced over the first two weekends in June, officials say.
Construction will begin Friday, May 31 through June 3 and finish Monday, June 7 through 10. Construction hours will be from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday each weekend. During the week in between construction, all roadways will be reopened to traffic.
I-95 traffic in both directions will be reduced to two lanes.
Route 1 will be detoured to Courtland and Hamilton avenues, and officials say motorists should expect delays.
A project of this size would typically take years, according to officials. But the DOT is utilizing a process called accelerated bridge construction, where the new structure is built next to the highway instead of on top of it. This minimizes construction time and construction impact on traffic.
State troopers are still encouraging commuters to plan ahead, plan alternate routes and to be patient.
