The death of a Tinton Falls woman has prompted state officials to start removing trees along Route 34 in Colts Neck.
Stacey Weathers, 46, died in the beginning of October when a tree fell on her car during windy weather. Weathers was the head of the New Jersey chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Cranford.
After the accident, the Department of Transportation did an inspection of the area and found potential dangers and decided to remove or cut back some of the trees.
Some of the trees being removed Wednesday were hollow inside. Others appeared to be healthy, but were too close to the highway.
The project is expected to last several more days.
A spokesperson for the DOT tells News 12 New Jersey that the department does not have its own arborist, so they are not sure exactly why so many of the trees were in poor condition.
