District warns parents of attempts to lure students
(10/05/07) BERNARDSVILLE - Police in Somerset County are investigating three incidents in which a man attempted to lure students into his car.
Police, who are unsure if the incidents are related, say a white male between 35 and 40 years old drove up to the Bernards High School administration building on Tuesday in a black sedan with tinted windows. He rolled down his window and told a male student standing by the building that he would give the student an Xbox 360 if he got in the car. The student didn?t take the bait and returned to the high school.
According to a letter to parents from the district, the suspect had long brown hair and was wearing a two-tone yellow shirt.
The district letter, sent Thursday, reported a second incident on Tuesday, in which a car with a similar description approached a girl on Anderson Road, also near the high school. The driver rolled down his window and asked her to wait while he pulled around, but the girl immediately fled home.
Police also report a third incident in which a similar black car with New York plates pulled into the Milltown School parking lot on Wednesday afternoon, but left without talking to anyone.
Police are investigating if the incidents are related.
Residents who spoke to News 12 said they are satisfied with how police and school officials are dealing with the event.
?I was pleased at their response and by the police department?s response to having a presence around town, you see them and there doing a good job," said a mother of four.
