Convicted killer Mark Caldwell was sentenced to life in prison Friday for the brutal 2005 murder of 22-year-old Kerlissa Romeo.

Romeo's family said the conviction and sentencing bring them peace, but nothing can bring back what they lost. Caldwell remained defiant after his sentencing, still insisting his innocence to the family.

"I would like to say I apologize to the people over there, but I didn't do this," said Caldwell.

Romeo and her husband Jason were walking home from a convenience store two years ago when Caldwell and a friend pulled a gun on them. The two cooperated as they were robbed, but the young woman was still shot and killed.

Caldwell's rap sheet extends to his days as a juvenile and includes 15 arrests as an adult.
