Toll hikes are now a reality for commuters in the Garden State.The Port Authority says the increases, which went into effect Sunday, will help fund a 10-year, $30 billion capital improvement plan. Officials say part of the plan includes $8.4 billion which will go toward helping to rebuild the World Trade Center.For drivers with E-ZPass using the Holland Tunnel, the Goethals and Bayonne bridges or the Outerbridge Crossing, the toll has jumped from $5 to $8 during peak hours. During off-peak hours, the cost has increased from $4 to $6. Drivers paying cash will now pay $8 across the board.The one-way PATH fare has gone up to $1.75 from $1.50 and fares with QuickCard and SmartLink have increased by 10 cents.The speed limit has also been lowered on the Garden State Parkway between exits 80 and 100. Instead of 65 mph, drivers now have a speed limit of 55 mph.
