Friends and family of a College of New Jersey student killed in a car crash gathered Tuesday for a vigil in his honor.
Friends say that 20-year-old Michael Sot volunteered to be a designated driver last weekend to take his friends to an off-campus event.
Sot was killed and his five passengers injured when his car was struck by 22-year-old David Lamar, who was driving impaired, according to authorities. Lamar and his passenger were also hurt in the crash, which occurred Sunday around 2 a.m. on Pennington Road in Ewing.
Sot died Tuesday afternoon. Loved ones gathered on Sot’s hometown of Clark for a candlelight vigil Tuesday night.
“He was always doing the right thing, no matter what. It’s just not fair…I don’t wish this upon anybody,” said friend Vincent Crisafi.
Sot was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Fraternity members tell News 12 New Jersey that having a designated driver is important to them.
“That’s probably the hardest part. To know that an accident is an accident and he can’t control it,” says Phi Kapa Psi member William Walker. “You can do everything in your power to do the right thing and it can still happen to you.”
Shortly after Sot died, his brother Jon Sot tweeted "Rest easy Mike. I will make you proud. I love you more than you'll ever know. See you soon".  A family friend says that Jon Sot flew in Monday from Boston to be at his brother’s side.
Lamar faces several charges, including vehicular homicide and assault by auto.
