Codey escapes car accident in East Orange
New Jersey's "accidental governor" had a close call when he almost got into a serious car wreck Sunday.
State Senate President Dick Codey, who has twice served as New Jersey's governor despite never being elected to the post, is livid after a driver who he says has a history of blacking out at the wheel almost hit him.
Codey says the driver, a young man with diabetes, should not be allowed behind the wheel for his and others' safety. Also, he wants to know why two East Orange police officers drove away instead of staying to help at the scene.
"As we're coming into the toll plaza ? my security says, 'Governor, there's a car on the left out of control,' " Codey says.
A guardrail protected the state senator and the trooper from the oncoming Saturn, whose unconscious driver the two then rushed to help.
Codey says the incident took place at Exit 145 in East Orange. He says the two East Orange officers were parked about 100 yards away. Codey says they had to know what was happening, but drove off.
"It's inexcusable because they didn't know that someone wasn't close to death," he says. "They saw that there was debris all over the roadway. They saw it was rather serious. Why would you not respond and help us is beyond me. It is inexcusable."
