Christie: Seaside Park explosion was act of terrorism
Gov. Chris Christie said the explosion that rocked a Jersey Shore community was definitely an act of terror.
The governor appeared on both CNN and FOX News Sunday morning to give an update.
"We just don't know who's responsible for it," he says. "Is it a domestic source, a foreign source? We don't know that at this time, but it was done intentionally to try to terrorize the people of New Jersey."
Christie says there are promising leads, but no suspects at this time.
He said New Jersey State Police and the Office of Homeland Security are working with the FBI to bring those responsible to justice as quickly as possible.
As News 12 reported, one of three pipe bombs exploded in a trash can moments before a charity run in Seaside Park on Saturday, prompting an evacuation of the area and an hourslong lockdown in the community.
The bombs that didn't explode were taken apart by the FBI in Quantico, Virginia and may allow officials to track down the bomber.
Eleven hours after the Seaside Park explosion, a bomb in or near a garbage can went off on 23rd Street in Manhattan, injuring those walking by. Another undetonated pressure cooker bomb was found four blocks away.
News 12 has heard that the bombs in New Jersey and New York had similarities and were both detonated by cellphones. The events have currently not been linked.
CNN also reported that the same man was spotted at both locations in New York where the bombs were set. CNN cited surveillance video that showed a man dragging a duffel bag at both sites and leaving the bag where the pressure cooker was recovered.
