In the midst of this week’s bitter cold conditions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise individuals to learn how to prepare for harsh conditions and protect themselves during frigid weather.

To avoid health issues, dress warmly and cover the entire body before heading out in the cold.

The CDC reports that skin may become cracked or waxy in the early stages of frostbite. Fingers or toes could turn black, blue and purple.

The CDC warns not to rub those areas or put them under a heating pad.

Hypothermia may cause the body to shiver and sweat.
